Ellen White condemned non-SDA ministers as deluded and "damned." However, she secretly took their writings and incorporated their ideas, their message, and even their words into her own writings. Thus, she transformed the words of the "damned" into "light from heaven" for her followers. Read more about this: Ellen White's AlchemyBrother Anderson, moderator, www.nonegw.org

I have read many of her "Testimonies" when I was a practicing Adventist, and I always wondered why she was given intimate details into the lives of other people about some of the most trivial things, things which she always found fault with, things which no prophet in all the Bible had such obsessions with. Reproving a king for his sins was one thing, but prophets didn't go around picking apart the lives of random church members in whatever church she found some juicy gossip about.
Speaking of the "alchemy" (perfect word) in the above article, I don't doubt she had a spirit guide. I don't doubt she had supernatural influence. If so, I don't doubt what manner of "spirit" was guiding her. It's also eye-opening that she could plagiarize to the hilt but required anyone quoting her to (rightly) give her proper credit. Except for the fact that they were likely ultimately quoting somebody else but didn't know it.
